As we age, the diversity of our microbiome decreases, which can lead to inflammation in the intestines. A study published in the BMJ Journal Gut examined whether the Mediterranean diet could have an impact on the intestinal health of older adults.
The study showed an improvement in gut flora (microbiome) when eating habits were changed to eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, olive oil, and fish while limiting sugar, saturated fat, and red meat. In fact, those who followed a Mediterranean diet produced lower markers of inflammation that have been shown to affect cognitive function and chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
Independently of this study, the Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, dementia, and stronger bones. This diet has also been shown to reduce the likelihood of erectile dysfunction.
The takeaway message: What you eat is important to your health. Eat whole foods and stay away from processed and packaged foods as much as possible.
